Welcome to National Signing Day ("NSD" to those in the biz) 2012. If you live in the South, today is an official holiday. Everywhere else, you're sitting at your desk or checking Twitter on your phone, waiting for updates on where high school football players have signed to play next season in hopes of eventually measuring up to the SEC. Here's a look at some of the nation's top football recruits - names that you'll undoubtedly become familiar with soon:
Rivals.com Top 10
01. Dorial Green-Beckham (WR) - UNDECIDED - all-time national receiving leader w/ 119 receptions, 2233 yards, and 24 touchdowns during his senior year alone; largely believed to be down to Arkansas and Missouri (the home-state school), and considered a major impact player at the wide receiver position ... UPDATE: he just committed to Missouri (guess we won't be seeing him at our G2 SEC Road Trip 2k12, boys)
02. DJ Humphries (OL) - Florida - at 6'5" and 265 pounds, I imagine he is a tank; can Florida find themselves a running back behind the line, though?
03. Mario Edwards (DT) - FSU - other scouting services consider Edwards the nation's best player (how can you even try to compare in football, though?); merely tallied 72 tackles, 32 of which were for a loss, and 11 sacks as a senior; I imagine most QB's were scared to death with this guy staring at them across the line
04. Shaq Thompson (DB) - Washington - played quarterback and running back in high school, but projects to be a defensive back at the next level; must be nice to be so multi-talented
05. Jonathan Gray (RB) - Texas - Gray is the all-time national career scoring leader after ... wait for it ... 65 touchdowns this past year; I will assume he put about 12 of those on the Dillon Panthers, because they were awful last year; Texas finally has another impact running back to rely on
06. Jonathan Bullard (DE) - Florida - 2 guys in the top 6 for the Gators? look out, it appears Muschamp has some talent rolling into Gainesville
07. Eddie Goldman (DT) - UNDECIDED - 6'4" 307lbs, that is not a small "kid" by any means; dominant lineman who is reportedly choosing between ... umm, well, everyone, so I'll just go ahead and guess he ends up in the SEC (Bama or Auburn)
08. Stefon Diggs (WR) - UNDECIDED - at 6'0" 185lbs and clocking a 4.43 40-yd dash, I'll just assume he projects as a speedster in the slot; when I clicked on his offer/interest list, it pretty much listed every team in America that is worth mentioning ... at least he's narrowed it down as we enter NSD
09. Noah Spence (DE) - Ohio State - he only had 108 tackles and 13 sacks last year, so I'm sure Urban Meyer is rapidly searching for an insurance policy here; guy is expected to be the next dominant lineman in the Big Ten, where legends are honored and leaders are made
10. Jameis Winston (QB) - FSU - 6'4" athletic quarterback out of the state of Alabama, Winston wow'd everyone in the Under Armour All-American game; I hope he ends up having a better career than Xavier Lee did at FSU
20. Gunner Kiel (QB) - Indiana kid who ended up the second-ranked HS quarterback overall, but the top "pro-style quarterback" recruit in the country; shocked everyone by giving a verbal commitment to IU last year, then switched to LSU, then ultimately enrolled at Notre Dame ... so we can't say much for his decision-making at this stage (hope it's much better on the field)
