News & Notes

The St. Louis Rams have announced that they are going to trade their #2 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, and the frenzy of teams (Browns, Redskins, Dolphins, Seahawks, to name a few ...) looking for a shot at getting Robert Griffin III can now begin. You knew the Rams weren't taking RG3, given how much they've invested in Sam Bradford, and they can certainly get far more in a trade than they could get out of any other possible draft pick in the #2 slot.

The Horizon League tournament gets underway this evening. The obvious significance is the presence of Butler, a team that has appeared in the last two national championship games, but lacks the credentials to secure an at-large bid to this year's tournament. Barring a tournament championship (Butler is the #5 seed), we won't have the pleasure of watching the Bulldogs try to make another magical run through March Madness. Butler hosts Wright State at Hinkle Fieldhouse tonight.

Notre Dame - one of the nation's hottest teams for the past 2 months - has fallen back to reality a bit in the past week. The Irish lost to St. John's on Saturday (the curse of Madison Square Garden continues for ND - they just can't win there), and followed that up by getting hammered by Georgetown last night. No shame in losing to Georgetown, but they were out-classed, shut down defensively, and looked like the team that everyone had written off after Tim Abromaitis's injury in the fall.

Tonight's game at Assembly Hall will go a long way in determining whether Michigan State earns a number one seed in March. They will be playing without guard Travis Trice, however, and it is their 5th game in the last 13 days (who put that schedule together?), so I expect IU to get another big victory at home. The Spartans are favored by 2 points, and I am calling for the outright W for the Hoosiers tonight.

The Orlando Magic are denying rumors of Dwight Howard to the Lakers ... doesn't that mean it's more than likey going to happen?

Daytona 500 - did anyone stay up to watch the finish? I gave it about 15 minutes before pure boredom set in. Danica was part of the big opening lap wreck, and after that, the only thing of any significance involved another wreck:

Damn, that's a lot of jet fuel.

I love paperboy! Not so much the grim reaper stabbing me, or the damn break dancer in the middle of the the street, or the sneaky tornado that came out of nowhere.... Dang that was a good game!!

I believe Indiana is also playing their 5th game in 13 days.

Nice jinx effort against my hoosiers. Are you planning on buying a Spartan victory by also putting some money on IU?

Occasional starter or not, Trice is not one of Sparty's top 7 players. It is their massive front line (Nix, Payne, Green) plus Appling that beat IU in Lansing. Not to mention the Valpo transfer (Wood?) that always gets up to have a chance to beat one of the schools that ignored him coming out of HS.

This could go either way, as indicated by the line, but when Izzo tells his troops in the locker room that all they have to do is outwork and out muscle the skinnier hoosiers for the next 40 minutes to claim an outright B10 title, they will come out amped. As usual, unfortunately, it will then fall to the officials to see how the game is called. If it is called tight, I fully expect the more physical Spartans to have foul trouble that will cost them the game against the deeper home team. If the refs let them play, MSU should roll (as they did at OSU two weeks ago when they absolutely and repeatedly punched the buckeyes in the mouth).

BTW, how about that for a prop bet, the o/u on number of fouls called? Tell me that would not intrigue you......

I put the o/u on fouls at 42

Rev, why must you call it a "jinx" effort every time I pick IU? They obviously play on a different level at home. Sparty is only favored by 2 points ... wonder why? Nix is also banged up, per reports. To what extent, I don't know. I just assume when people say that about Nix, it means he ate too many cheeseburgers before the game and can't make it up/down the court with ease, a la Renardo Sidney. I don't care about IU enough to where I just throw away money hoping IU loses. "Buying a win" theory only applies to the team you root for, and in my case, everyone knows it ain't the Hoosiers.

And to Anonymous - I'm sorry, but playing NC-Central College for Fine Arts meant that IU essentially had an entire week off before the Minnesota game. You don't get to count that one.

I know what you are up to, Ice :)

You're paranoid. I don't mess around with my cash, homie.

That game was the shit. Countless hours spent throwing that rolled up paper into mailboxes and onto porches, while breaking windows.
